Watonga is the county seat of Blaine County, located at the junction where State Highways 8 and 33 meet U.S. Highway 270. The Northwestern Oklahoma community grew from a tent city in the midst of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Reservation. It was part of a non-Indian settlement opened in a land run on April 19, 1892.
The town was named for Arapaho Chief Wa-ton-gha, whose name meant Black Coyote. A post office was established in 1892. In 1902, the Enid and Anadarko Railway opened a line extending west from Guthrie and passed through Watonga. The 60-mile leg was the community’s first rail connection and became a vital transportation link for the area’s growing agricultural industry. Four years later, the Blaine County Courthouse was built and remains as one of several in Oklahoma that predate statehood.
In October 1892, Thompson B. Ferguson arrived in Watonga and established the Watonga Republican newspaper. In 1901, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed him as Oklahoma’s eighth territorial governor. He served until 1906, leaving office a year before Oklahoma became the nation’s 46th state.
By 1940, the city had grown to a population of more than 2,800. That same year, the Watonga Cheese Factory was established in a building that had formerly served as an ice and electric plant. The factory, famous for its many dairy products, inspired Watonga’s annual cheese festival in 1976. After operating in Watonga for 70 years, damage from Tropical Storm Erin forced the cheese factory to relocate in 2010, but the annual Watonga Cheese Festival continues to be a community celebration every October.
Watonga’s current population is about 3,000. Famous people from the community include native son Clarence Nash, who provided the voice of Walt Disney’s cartoon character Donald Duck.
Buildings on the National Register of Historic Places include the Watonga National Guard Armory, the Blaine County Courthouse, the Noble Hotel, the Thompson Benton Ferguson House, the Cronkhite Ranch House, the U.S. Post Office, and the J. H. Wagner House.

Faith In Heritage
In 1945, the need for a quality Long Term & Rehabilitation Care facility in Western Oklahoma was growing. Through faith based roots in Corn, OK – Corn Heritage Village was established to meet the needs of the communities in which Western Oklahoma families had grown their lives.
The Corn Mennonite Brethren Church established Corn Heritage Village in 1945 as a non-profit, faith based, Long Term Care & Rehabilitation Care community in order to provide the goal of having quality care for the families in Western Oklahoma.
The heritage based in Corn Heritage Village is one of treating our residents and their families the way we treat our own families, because we all live in the same communities and deeply care about the quality we achieve.
Growth Through Support

The original facilities in 1945 contained fourteen rooms and kitchen facilities. It was heated by fuel oil furnace and steam and there was no air conditioning.
1950 – 24 hour care and service came into effect, before the American Nursing Home Association was established. Corn Heritage Village was Rated a Type I Home, the top of the line, a rating which continues through today.
1960 – CHV added its first addition, including 13 rooms, 23 beds, a devotional room, a new kitchen, nurses’ station, and enlarged dining room space complete with central HVAC.
1968 – Another addition was built which included 26 additional beds with a new chapel and nurses’ station. An elevator was added into the original three story facility.
1987 – A completely new Corn Heritage Village facility was built which included 104 beds, 26 private rooms, and 39 semi-private rooms. There were eight two-bedroom apartments.
2006 – Corn Heritage Village added an additional location in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Complete with Rehabilitation Care & Skilled Nursing.
2018 – The new addition to the CHV Weatherford Location Was Completed With Improvements. Modernized facilities, amenities, & extended rehabilitation care are all a part of our growing community.
After decades of successful years contributing to the Long Term Care and Rehabilitation of Western Oklahoma, Corn Heritage Village is proud to announce the new modernized addition to the Weatherford facility.

Since assuming operations of the Watonga hospital on July 1, 2012, Mercy has made a number of improvements and investments in the modernization of the hospital facilities with the support of the community. With an initial investment of $1 million dollars, Mercy launched our electronic health record (EHR) in Watonga, allowing clinicians immediate access to patient records electronically from every nurses’ station, exam room and doctor’s office across Mercy. EHR provides seamless care for Mercy patients. Through EHR Mercy patients also have access MyMercy to view their medical records, records of their children and other people whose health they manage. This patient portal to the electronic health record allows patients to schedule appointments with their Mercy provider; communicate through private two-way messaging with their care team; view lab results in a timely manner; request prescription refills; and pay bills online.
Mercy also brought a number of new services to Watonga, including respite care for hospice patients, pediatric therapy and virtual care. With the addition of virtual care, patients can be connected to specialists located across the country while staying close to home.
In September 2017, construction was completed on a new emergency department consisting of four private treatment rooms (one with isolation and decontamination capabilities), a nurse’s station, med room and supply room. The second phase, which includes remodeled ED waiting and registration areas, was completed two months later. Phase three, which includes a new out-patient waiting area and a remodel of the old ED space for radiology use, opened in February 2018.
In 2018, Becker’s Hospital Review named Mercy Hospital Watonga as a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital.
Thanks to the support of the community, the hospital continues to work closely with the city of Watonga to plan capital improvement projects in order to ensure our patients are receiving the best care possible.
Mercy is committed to enhancing health care in Blaine County and continuing to build a strong, healthy foundation for generations to come.
